  52. 1. Programm description
  53.  
  54. Random MIDI Player (RMP)  is useful utility for playing MIDI
  55. files  (.MID, .RMI).  It is very easy to use. You don't have
  56. to create  any MIDI collection.  Just select  directory tree
  57. with your  MIDI files,  RMP then searches  through directory 
  58. tree and loads  all available MIDI files.  Then it starts to 
  59. play  them either randomly or  in sequence according to your
  60. configuration.

  62. You can choose  if you want to search through subdirectories
  63. and if you want to start  playing  immediately  after end of
  64. search procedure.
  65.  
  66. You can easily select  out good  MIDI files.  Just configure
  67. "Save directory"  option  to  your  favorite MIDI  directory
  68. and if you listen to good MIDI file press button "Save file"
  69. and currently playing  MIDI file will be copied to your MIDI
  70. directory.  You can fasten this operation by selecting "Play
  71. just intro." feature in predefined intro length.

  73. What more?  If you  are bored  with repeating  the same MIDI
  74. files again and again you can disable "Allow song repetition"
  75. feature and you will not here any song twice.  After playing
  76. all available  MIDI files  in predefined  order RMP will ask
  77. you either  select another directory  or play all MIDI files
  78. again.  It is up to you.  With this feature I'm able to play
  79. my  collection  of  almost 10000 MIDI  files  (500 hours) in 
  80. almost 500 subdirectories  without getting bored of repeated
  81. songs.

  85. 2. New features and changes for version 2.0 since 2.0 Beta
  86.  
  87. a) Bug with iterative appearing "All songs have been played"
  88.    dialog  when  was  "Allow song repetition"  disabled  was
  89.    corrected.
  90. b) In system notifcation area if  you stop mouse over  RMP's
  91.    icon a name of song will appear instead  of  "Random MIDI
  92.    Player" text.
  93. c) Number of played and unpleyed songs was added to the main
  94.    dialog.
  95. d) Icons signalizing if song was or was not played have been
  96.    added to the loaded songs list.

  102. a) Save song feature was changed so it runs under NT 4.0
  103. b) Delete song feature was changed so it runs under NT 4.0
  104. c) Resize item in RMP application system menu deleted
  105. d) Mazimize item in RMP application system menu disabled
  106. e) Notification  routine  corrected.  After  pause  of  some
  107.    songs and resume,  RMP  stopped  at  its end  and did not
  108.    continue to play next song.

  112. 4. New features and changes for version 2.0 Beta since 1.1
  113.  
  114. a) Icon in Window 95 notification tray.  After program start
  115.    a small icon appears in taskbar.  Left click  on the icon
  116.    will pause  and resume playing song. Right click  on  the
  117.    icon will unhide RMP if hidden.
  118. b) Path and song name were separated so there is more space
  119.    display complete song name.
  120. c) Delete song feature added. As you can select out and copy
  121.    you favourite song to  save  directory  with  "Save song"
  122.    button,  now you have  similar "Delete song" button which
  123.    will move currently  playing song  to predefined  "trash"
  124.    folder.  Later you can delete songs  from trash folder or 
  125.    do with it whatever you want. Trash folder can be defined
  126.    in configuration dialog as "Deleted MIDI folder".
  127. d) Another button  "Hide"  will  hide  the  application  and
  128.    remove it from taskbar. RMP can be accessed  through  the 
  129.    icon on the icon tray of taskbar. Left click  on the icon
  130.    will pause  and resume playing song. Right click  on  the
  131.    icon will unhide RMP if hidden.
  132. e) Start hidden checkbox was added  to  configuration dialog
  133.    box. If checked RMP will  after start of application hide
  134.    itself as if "Hide" button was pressed.
  135. f) "Use MIDI tag list" option was added  to  config  dialog.
  136.    This feature if  on  will, when  leaving  application  or
  137.    changing folder, save file "MIDITAGS.RMP" to  the  folder
  138.    from which MIDI files were  loaded.  This  file  contains 
  139.    information about songs which have been and have not been
  140.    played. Uppon restart application or reload of directory
  141.    tree containing "MIDITAGS.RMP" RMP will change attributes
  142.    of all loaded files according to information from the
  143.    file. This feature will ensure (together with "Allow song
  144.    repetition" feature disabled) that no song will be played
  145.    twice even if you leave and enter application.
  146. g) Soundcard initialization feature added.  Many  songs  are
  147.    modifying sound  card  parameters.  With this feature you
  148.    can  initialize sound card  after start of application or
  149.    before  each  song.  Just  choose  appropriate   function 
  150.    through radio buttons in configuration  dialog and if you
  151.    selected    some    kind    of   initialization,   choose
  152.    initialization file.
  153. h) Pause  function  now  releases  multimedia  system  while 
  154.    pausing.  It is slower to resume then if MMC would not be
  155.    released but some users  wanted  this.  The  slowdown  of
  156.    resume function is not too significant.  If someone  will
  157.    find the delay too  long just  let me know and I will add
  158.    option  "Release  MMC  while  pausing"  to  configuration
  159.    dialog.
  160. i) Files with extension .KAR are now accepted together  with
  161.    files with extensions .MID and .RMI during search process.

  166. 5. New features and changes for version 1.1 since 1.0
  167.  
  168. a) Windows progress bar  was replaced with slider control so
  169.    user can change current song  position  like  in  windows
  170.    media player. Ticks are set up each 10 seconds.
  171. b) Displaying of song filename and path was  changed  to  be
  172.    able always display song filename even if whole path does
  173.    not fit in line length.
  174.    For example song path
  175.    "C:\Windows\Media\Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3.rmi"
  176.    is shorten to path
  177.    "C:\...\Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3.rmi"
  178. c) Corrected bug  in  random  generator  setup.  Songs  were
  179.    played  always  in  the  same   "random"   order.  Random
  180.    generator is now intialized with  time  in  seconds  from
  181.    1. 1. 1980 and time from  windows  startup.  This  should
  182.    result in correct random song generation. (I hope.)
  183. d) Corrected  problems with "Resume" function in Windows NT.
  184.    For some unknown reason Windows NT does  not  accept  MCI
  185.    command MCI_RESUME. I resolved this  problem  by  calling 
  186.    MCI_PLAY instead of MCI_RESUME.
  187. e) Double click on any song in the list will play  this song
  188.    even if this song  was  already  played  and you have not
  189.    checked "Allow song repetition" check box.
  190. f) Litlle bit changed hidden feature in about box.

  194. 6. Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0 limitations
  195.  
  196. Application works OK in  Windows 95,  but if you want to use
  197. Windows NT,  you have  to start  RMP with starting directory
  198. set  to  your  MIDI  files  directory  tree,  because during
  199. programm  execution  you are  not able  to use Browse folder
  200. function  which  is  implemented  in  Windows 95 only. Other
  201. possibility is  to use  Windows NT 4.0  or  Windows NT  with
  202. Shell technology preview from Microsoft.  Some  features  of
  203. version 2.0 are not supported under Windows NT 3.5 so  think
  204. about upgrade your old NT.  Some  bugs may occur  in  NT 4.0
  205. because Microsoft is changing it  and releasing upgrades and
  206. service packs faster then I am able repair my program.

  210. 7. Tips for Random MIDI Player use
  211.  
  212. a) Create a shortcut for  Random MIDI Player  with  start-up
  213.    folder  ("Start in" property)  set  to  your  MIDI  files 
  214.    directory tree.  Then put this shortcut to  your  Windows
  215.    StartUp folder (group). Remember to check "Search folders
  216.    recursively" option. All songs in directory tree  will be
  217.    played after Windows start.
  218. b) Have you tried to press CTRL+SHIFT  and  double-click  on
  219.    THE BIG ICON in about dialog box? Not? Try it!!!
  220. c) This is very nic if you have  very  large  collection  of 
  221.    MIDI  files  on  your harddrive and you want to sort them 
  222.    out. Just create shortcut of RMP with starting  directory 
  223.    poiniting to your  MIDI  directory  structure  and  check 
  224.    option "Use MIDI tag list" and uncheck option "Allow song
  225.    repetition". Then fill  "Save MIDI folder"  and  "Deleted 
  226.    MIDI folder"  with  apropriate  paths  and  everything is 
  227.    done. No song will play twice  and  you  can  store  good 
  228.    songs  easily  by  press of "Save song" button and delete
  229.    the bad ones with single click on "Delete song" button.

  233. 8. Shareware notice
  234.  
  235. This software  is provided  as shareware.  If you  find this
  236. program useful,  please send me $10 US (or equivalent in any
  237. other currency).  I  will  send you  the  newest  version of
  238. Random  MIDI  Player  without   annoying  shareware  notice.
  239. Shareware notice appears each 20 minutes.  If you want me to 
  240. send you RMP by post please add  $5 - $10  for  postage  and 
  241. packing. Remember to provide your E-mail  address.  If  your
  242. mailbox is unable to accept large  mail  (approx. 200 kB)  I
  243. will give you access to our ftp site where you can  download
  244. latest version of RMP without any limitations.  You can send
  245. International Money Orders, American Express  or  cash,  but
  246. remember sending cash is the most hazardeous, even it is the
  247. best and quickest for me.
